Unity Point Health Meriter Foundation

The QTI Group has been exclusively retained by Unity Point Health Meriter Foundation to recruit for their new Foundation President. The Meriter Foundation President will work with his or her staff and healthcare partners to raise much-needed funding for programs and services to support the community across the UPH - Meriter service delivery area in Dane County and South Central Wisconsin. The President will serve as the face of the Meriter Foundation, reporting to the UnityPoint Health – Meriter (UPH-Meriter) CEO, and accountable to the Foundation’s Board of Directors.    The President will demonstrate leadership in all operations of the Foundation, including tactical and strategic planning, major gift development, asset management, funds distribution, and team development. She/he will serve as the liaison to the UPH - Meriter Hospital Senior Leadership Team.  The Foundation President will also be actively engaged with the UPH System Foundation’s development team and will work in collaboration with UPH – Meriter’s regional partner, UW Health, to best meet community needs.  The next Meriter Foundation President will have exceptional relationship building skills, knowledge of building endowments and planned giving efforts, and experience mentoring and leading a team. The President will foster a supportive and collaborative culture, both internally, and with UPH – Meriter Hospital and UW partners.

Essential Function and Responsibilities


  • Communicate and promote a strong commitment to the mission of UPH – Meriter Hospital.
  • Demonstrate the values and ethics of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy “Statement of Professional Standards and Conduct” at all times.
  • Develop and execute annual strategic plan and goals in alignment with UPH – Meriter’s strategic priorities, which will include building an active strategy to engage UPH - Meriter board and the Meriter Foundation Board.
  • Serve as the primary steward of a culture of philanthropy among the Hospital board, the Foundation Board, executives, employees, physicians and medical staff.
  • Position Meriter Foundation as the region’s premier healthcare foundation by creating an awareness and visibility for the Foundation through effective marketing internally and externally Lead a staff of six and strategically hire staff that possess complex skill sets to advance the mission of the Foundation; Nurture the team to thrive on innovation, results, high standards, calculated risks, cost effectiveness and collaboration.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of best practices in regulatory, legislative, legal, estate, financial and social developments as they pertain to healthcare and philanthropy.
  • Oversee donor recognition and communications, design and implementation, and donor events.
  • Build a sustainable infrastructure that will withstand staff changes and turnover.
  • Continue to earn donor trust in the Foundation by complying with IRS regulations to preserve the organization’s 501(c) (3) status.

Major Gift and Planned Giving Development

  • Working closely and collaboratively with the Development team, actively engage in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding financial gifts to support the community’s health care needs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with high capacity hospital and foundation board members, executives, physicians, medical staff, grateful patients, alumni, community, business, non-profit leaders and other key stakeholders so they understand the important impact of their Meriter Foundation gifts in the community.
  • Build and implement a Planned Giving strategy to increase estate and planned gifts.

Board Development

  • Maintain principle contact with the Foundation Board Chair and Vice Chair and all board members. Provide training, education and orientation to allow board members to effectively execute their duties.
  • Oversee and ensures compliance with governance and by-laws of Board and Committees.
  • Assist in recruitment of effective board members.
  • Collaborate with Meriter Foundation Board Finance Committee in the management of endowment, portfolio and investments.
  • Collaborate in the awarding of Meriter Foundation Board Research and Education Grant Committee dollars.

Uphold UnityPoint Health Performance Standards

  • Demonstrate the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Practice and reflect knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Adhere to hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Bring any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff.  Take appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.     

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ten years of fund development experience such as capital campaigns in complex organizations.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to foster a healthy organizational culture, with the management skills to encourage teamwork and collaboration to meet goals, and the emotional intelligence to inspire, support, and develop staff.
  • Proven experience successfully leading the development, implementation, and execution of a strategic operational plan; ability to provide thoughtful and long-term visioning.
  • Comfortable with analytics, market analysis, research and database functions.
  • Comfortable in large, complex, and fast paced organizations.
  • A solid understanding of general health care compliance standard regulations
  • Comfortable in computer knowledge; Microsoft Suite applications, email, Windows operating system and web browser.
  • Experience working with a board.
  • Master’s Degree required, Ph. D preferred.
