Summary:

Credit Union National Association is excited to announce an opening for an Advocacy Team Coordinator. The individual in this role will support the advocacy team by implementing advocacy strategies, developing business unit communications, providing research and analysis, attending and monitoring Congressional hearings, and liaising with stakeholders.


This position will be considered a hybrid with a blend of remote and in-office work at CUNA’s Washington, D.C. office.


Responsibilities:

  • Removing barriers so that credit unions can more fully serve their members
  • Ensuring that the statutory and regulatory environment under which credit unions operate is as favorable as possible
  • Supporting the Chief Advocacy Officer in the execution of their responsibilities and the execution of the CUNA/League 360-degree advocacy strategy, as described below and as assigned
  • Participating in Advocacy Business Unit Leadership meetings
  • Developing and managing the business unit’s member- and Capitol Hill-facing communications and produce advocacy messaging material, Congressional visit material, and other communications
  • Drafting and editing CUNA’s Weekly Advocacy Update
  • Working independently and with subject matter experts to write, edit and post content to the Removing Barrier’s Blog
  • Managing the Removing Barrier’s blog and other member-facing Advocacy communication.
  • Maintaining the Advocacy website, ensuring that the material published on the website is accurate and up to date
  • Developing – and keeping current – Congressional briefing material and other background information used by Leagues and credit unions to advocate before Congress
  • Developing and sending messages to Capitol Hill under the direction of the Chief Advocacy Officer and Deputy Chief Advocacy Officer
  • Producing Advocacy Business Unit webinars
  • Ensuring internal and external stakeholders receive communications sent to Capitol Hill and other activities that should receive coverage in the media and member-communications
  • Providing research and analysis for the Advocacy Business Unit
  • Attending or monitoring Congressional hearings and other proceedings and write summaries and blog posts regarding these proceedings
  • Assisting in the preparation of CUNA testimony before Congress, including contributing to drafts of written testimony, participating in witness preparation, processing changes to the oral statement and perfecting written testimony for delivery
  • Liaising with Internal and External Stakeholders, including credit unions, state credit union leagues, and other CUNA departments
  • Attending meetings on behalf of and representing the Chief Advocacy Officer
  • Responding to inquiries on behalf of the Chief Advocacy Officer
  • Managing the League GAPs Community, including adding members, adding letters and other documents, and ensuring CUNA team members have visibility to community content
  • Compiling information for Leagues and credit unions when requested
  • Triaging incoming advocacy-related issues from general CUNA inquiries
  • Working with the Strategic Communications team to provide content, direction, and feedback on marketing materials including Magnet Mail distributions, Advocacy briefing materials, and other Hill-related documents
  • Working with the Chief Political Officer, the Deputy Chief Advocacy Officers, and political affairs staff to develop and implement various advocacy strategies
  • Assisting in the production of the quarterly lobbying report by tracking all letters sent to legislators and regulators
  • Managing the business unit’s Teams platform and assisting team members in effectively utilizing it
  • Ensuring that Advocacy Team members are fulfilling assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Participating in issue-based teams, as assigned
  • Collaborating with other CUNA staff to look for opportunities to provide support within and outside of the Advocacy Team
  • Managing the business unit’s participation in the Governmental Affairs Conference, including development of briefing material, coordination of breakout sessions, interacting with Solutions staff on logistics, and liaising with Marketing and Communications staff
  • Acting as liaison/resource center for new employees
  • Assisting the Deputy Chief Advocacy Officers with duties
  • Providing support for the committees to which advocacy team member’s liaison including taking minutes, communicating with Committee members, preparing briefing materials, and making meeting arrangements


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, History, Communications or comparable degree OR relevant experience in lieu of education
  • Experience working in a Capitol Hill office or working in government affairs at a trade association or similar organization is a plus
  • This position requires an understanding of the legislative and regulatory process
  • This position requires the ability to research broad public policy matters and explore their implications on credit unions
  • This position is expected to contribute to the development of key arguments and message points on the most critical legislative issues facing credit unions and will be expected to develop subject matter expertise advocacy issues relevant to credit unions
  • This position requires a team player that can handle several issues concurrently and work well within a dynamic department
  • This position requires strong writing ability and understanding of the need to reach multiple audiences with a message
